How to Tell if Someone is Having A Stroke

May is stroke month. Here’s how to tell if someone is having a stroke.

Act F.A.S..T.

F.A.S.T. is a quick and easy way to identify if someone is having a stroke.

F.A.S.T. stands for face, arms, speech, and time.

Some of the common warning signs include drooping of one side of the face. On the affected side, the person may not be able to use their arm or hand.

Speech may sound slurred or sound mumbled.

Time is of the essence. Call 911 right away. Quick treatment can have an impact on the lasting effect of a stroke.

If one or more of these symptoms are present, it might signal a transient ischemic attack (TIA). A TIA is a temporary loss of brain function and requires immediate medical attention. Call 911 immediately.

Stroke symptoms include:

  • Weakness or paralysis of an arm, leg, or a side of the face or body.

  • Numbness, tingling, or decreased sensation.

  • Vision changes.

  • Slurred speech, inability to speak or understand speech.

  • Difficulty reading or writing.

  • Swallowing difficulties or drooling.

  • Loss of memory.

  • Vertigo (spinning sensation).

  • Loss of balance or coordination.

  • Personality changes.

  • Mood changes.

  • Depression or apathy.

  • Drowsiness, lethargy, or loss of consciousness.

  • Uncontrollable eye movements or eyelid drooping.
